‘A wonderful collection of essays…’ – Tony Kushner, The New York Times
'This really is a story worth reading' – The Independent

Through the history of art and literature there have been many partnerships of immense creativity; husbands, wives, lovers and companions who have inspired, cherished and enabled the production of great works.

In this selection of essays a variety of writers, including Whitney Chadwick, Anne Higonnet and Isabelle de Courtivron, look back at the 'significant others' who people the worlds of art and literature in the twentieth century.

As well as such famous artistic pairings as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, or Sonia and Robert Delaunay, the authors examine several of the permutations of the Bloomsbury Group and the more hard-bitten partnership of Lillian Hellman and Dashiel Hammett.

Significant Others combines biography with evaluation of each partner's work in the context of the relationship – encouraging us to think in new ways about creative interaction, and so to reassess both women's and men's contribution to culture and the importance of their art.
