Avebury parish in Wiltshire contains the most amazong collection of Stone Age monuments to be found anywhere in the world.

Michael Dames explores the mystery of the Avebury monuments and reveals their collective purpose. Making use of archaeology, ethnography and folklore, he argues that the monuments were key elements in the worship of the Great Goddess, each revealing a different aspect of the ancient fertility cycle corresponding to the agricultural year.

Michael Dames is a graduate in geography and British Archaeology and a former senior lecturer in the History of Art. His other publications include 'Mythic Ireland' and 'The Silbury Treasure'.
