The book’s monographic essays focus on major women artists, including Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Louise Bourgeois, Cecily Brown, Joan Mitchell, Alice Neel, Kiki Smith, Liza Lou and Miwa Yanagi.
An introduction by Maura Reilly provides an overview of Nochlin’s life and work and an analysis of her impact and continuing influence on younger scholars, and a specially commissioned interview with Nochlin investigates the status of women artists today.
Linda Nochlin is Lila Acheson Wallace Professor of Modern Art Emerita, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Her major books include Courbet, Representing Women and Women, Art, and Power.
Maura Reilly has worked as a critic for Art in America and as a lecturer at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. She is co-author, with Linda Nochlin, of Global Feminisms: New Directions in Contemporary Art.
