Gaudier-Brzeska: Life and Art

(With a Catalogue Raisonné of the Sculpture)
Evelyn Silber
Photographs by David Finn

Henri Gaudier-Brzeska was only twenty-three years old when he was killed in the trenches in 1915, but he had already produced a body of work that established him as one of the key figures of twentieth-century sculpture. A champion of Vorticism, he was a member of the pre-war London circle that included Wyndham Lewis, Jacob Epstein and Roger Fry, and his use of semi-abstract forms and direct carving techniques were to have a profound influence on artists such as Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.

This magnificently illustrated book, including over 100 photographs specially commissioned from the renowned photographer David Finn, contains the first complete catalogue of Gaudier-Brzeska’s sculpture, as well as illustrating many of his remarkable and candid drawings. In re-evaluating Gaudier-Brzeska’s life and art Evelyn Silber sheds new light on the artistic development in Britain in the early years of the twentieth century, and provides a fascinating insight into the origins and development of Modernism and contemporary art.
