Starting with Guttuso’s early works, much influenced by Manet and Delacroix, Maurizio Calvesi charts his growth as an artist while Sarah Whitfield considers his left-wing leanings and how his political affiliations affected his work. In a separate essay James Hyman look at his influence on the work of mid-century British artists like Michael Ayrton, John Minton, Peter de Francia and Harry Baines.
