The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe

6500-3500 BC Myths and Cult Images

Marija Gimbutas

‘This splendidly illustrated book brings together an archaeological documentation hardly to be found elsewhere’
Mircea Eliade in
'History of Religions'

‘… a varied and exciting body of material, which represents a truly enviable amount of research’
– Antiquity

The long-accepted view that the peoples who inhabited southeast Europe in earliest times derived the themes underlying their art and imagery, and the basic elements of their religion, from the Near East has been increasingly invalidated.

In this scientific breakthrough, which Professor Colin Renfrew described as a ‘pioneer work’ and which has become a classic, Professor Gimbutas substantiates her important thesis of the development in ‘Old Europe’ of a systematic conception and pantheon of goddesses during the Upper Palaeolithic – a tradition that was carried into Neolithic times and beyond.

Professor Gimbutas presents us with a rich body of otherwise inaccessible illustrations of cult figures from pre-Indo-European Europe. Also included is a detailed list of the principal archaeological sites, together with a full bibliography updated for this edition.

Marija Gimbutas was Professor of European Archaeology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Curator of Old World Archaeology at the UCLA Museum of Cultural History.
