‘Look at the light in Benares during the monsoon,’ Simon said, holding out to me a thick, black, torn journal. I dissected the large pages, hardened by humidity, full of mischievous sadhus and fantastic palaces: drawings, collages, photographs, paintings… my friend’s notebooks bore witness to ten years of adventures, of encounters, of a life of intense experiences.
A taste for beauty and a love of adventure stories motivated us to work together on this book, somewhere between a travel guide, a picture album and a diary. The Rivers of the Mandala tells of the discovery of Mount Kailas, Tibet’s sacred mountain, by two young travellers following in the footsteps of their forefathers: Sven Hedin, Giuseppe Tucci, Lama Govinda… all explorers of exotic lands and of the soul, travellers in body and in mind; but the death of Simon's brother Thomas in a car accident in Afghanistan would alter his perception of the mystical nature of the regions through which they had both travelled.
Simon Allix is an artist-traveller who brought back a collection of exceptional sketchbooks and superb photographs from his ten years of Asian adventuring. He is currently the artistic director for the SDEF (Société des Explorateurs Français). Benoit de Vilmorin is a journalist, producer and presenter of cultural and music programmes for several Paris radio stations. He has also written for various French literary and cultural magazines.
