Made Wijaya is southeast Asia’s most successful landscape architect and designer. This gloriously illustrated retrospective explores the garden designs, the inspirations and styles that he has adopted as his own. These ‘Collections’, as he calls them, have enhanced luxury hotels such as the Bali Four Seasons Resort, Hyatt and Amandari, and transformed more than 400 gardens in the tropical world, including David Bowie’s former Mustique estate and Wijaya’s own haven, the Villa Bebek, in Sanur, Bali.
Dividing his book into thematic sections, Wijaya has drawn liberally from his portfolio of ‘Collections’ to illustrate and illuminate a lively and informative text. He also outlines the historical and architectural perspectives he has used to create his water gardens, Balinese gardens, paths and paving, compang, floating pavilions and courtyards. The book is also a practical guide, with many suggestions for achieving similar results and with sound advice for professionals.
Decorated throughout with evocative drawings and superbly chosen images from an international selection of photographers, this work is an inspiration for gardeners everywhere and a glorious celebration of more than twenty years spent perfecting the art of tropical garden design.
Made Wijaya has lived and worked in Bali for nearly thirty years. A recognized authority on tropical gardens and architecture, he has written many books on the subject, among them Architecture of Bali, also published by Thames & Hudson. Wijaya also lectures on landscape design at the National University of Singapore, encouraging a new generation of architects and designers to view the making of tropical gardens as an art form.
