Walker Evans: Signs

Essay by Andrei Codrescu

From the late 1920s until his death, Walker Evans returned obsessively to to particular subjects. His fascination with signs resulted in some of his greatest photographs: billboards, movie posters, street signs – signs of all kinds and the people and places around them.

This book brings together images from the era most associated with Evans – the rural South of the 1930s – with images which will be less familiar, such as his images of New York City, Chicago and Havana.

These are haunting, beautiful and sometimes funny records of American life over 50 years, and poet and novelist Andrei Codrescu has provided a lively provocative essay to accompany them.
