Wonderful Wiener Werkstätte

Design in Vienna 1903-1932

Christian Brandstätter

‘Beautiful ... makes no apology for just gorging itself on the intoxicating visual artistry of the time’
– idFX

‘A book that should ideally be on every serious collector’s bookshelf ... offers as complete a record as we are ever likely to see of the group’s astonishingly creative output’
– Birmingham Post

This generously illustrated volume offers as complete a record as we are ever likely to see of the astonishing achievements of the Wiener Werkstätte – 'Vienna Workshops' – an idealistic offspring of Art Nouveau which strived for integration of the fine and applied arts.

Founded in 1903 by the original members of the Vienna Secession Joseph Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the workshops eventually involved hundred of artists, including Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Carl Otto Czeschka and Oskar Kokoschka. The talents of the participants extended to everything from furniture, metal work, glass and ceramics to jewelry, books and graphic design.
The movement has proved to be one of the high points of modern design history and a beacon for artists and designers ever since.

Including integrated environments such as Hoffmann's Palais Stoclet in Brussels and Fledermaus Cabaret in Vienna, the book details the full breadth of the workshop's designs from the architectural down to decorative mosaics and even postcards.

Christian Brandstätte is the author of many books about Viennese art of the twentieth century and is the leading publisher in the field.
