Australian Painting Now

Edited by Laura Murray Cree
and Nevill Drury

Alive, arresting and diverse, Australian painting continues to extend cultural and aesthetic boundaries in new ways.

Australian Painting Now profiles the work of 80 significant contemporary Australian artists, and provides a view of the achievements of the Australian art scene in recent years.

Nominated for inclusion by 14 Australian writers on art, the artists introduced range from postmodernists to those who have chosen to abandon theories of art altogether. Some are engaged with their immediate environment, others explore myths or seek a sense of transcendence which takes painting beyond form and context. The work of Aboriginal artists recording the sacred iconography of their land is an important feature, and Australian Painting Now also includes current innovative approaches to art, building on directions explored by Australian painting in the 1970s and 1980s.
