Paul Koudounaris lives in Los Angeles, where he took his doctorate in the art history department of UCLA. His first book, 'The Empire of Death: A Cultural History of Ossuaries and Charnel Houses', was published by Thames & Hudson in 2011.
He has written widely on European ossuaries and charnel houses for both academic and popular journals. He visited and photographed over seventy sites containing human bones in nearly twenty countries in the course of writing 'The Empire of Death'.
