Thames & Hudson is a leading global publisher of illustrated books on visual culture. We work with museums, galleries and cultural institutions around the world to create ambitious, beautifully produced and authoritative publications.

 

Our museum and institutional publishing list includes partnerships with organisations such as the British Museum and the V&A in London, M+ in Hong Kong and the al-Sabah Collection in Kuwait.

 

We are looking for an experienced Editorial Manager to join our Museum Publishing Programme, reporting to the Editorial Director of Museum and Institutional Publishing.

 

The role

 

This is a varied and collaborative role for an experienced illustrated-book editor and project manager with a strong interest in art, design and museum publishing.

 

You will manage a range of complex illustrated titles through all stages of the editorial and production process, working closely with authors, curators, designers, production colleagues and freelance editorial staff to deliver books to a high editorial and visual standard.

 

Alongside managing your own projects, you will help oversee the wider museum publishing programme and line-manage a small editorial team.

 

This role would suit someone who enjoys balancing creative collaboration with detailed project management, and who is comfortable managing multiple schedules, stakeholders and priorities at once.

 

What you’ll be doing

 

  • Managing several complex illustrated books simultaneously from manuscript to publication
  • Working collaboratively with museum and institutional partners, authors, curators, designers and production teams
  • Scheduling projects and monitoring budgets and workflows
  • Managing freelance editors and other external contributors
  • Copy-editing and reviewing text to a high standard where required
  • Tracking progress across the wider museums publishing list
  • Line-managing Senior Project Editors and an Editorial Assistant
  • Supporting a positive, collaborative and inclusive team culture

 

 

What we’re looking for

 

We’re looking for someone with strong editorial judgement, excellent organisational skills and experience managing illustrated publishing projects.

 

You’ll ideally bring:

  • Significant editorial experience, ideally in illustrated or museum publishing
  • Experience managing complex projects, schedules and budgets
  • Experience working with external contributors and freelance editorial staff
  • Previous people-management or mentoring experience
  • Strong copy-editing and proofreading skills
  • A good working knowledge of Adobe InDesign
  • Excellent communication and relationship-management skills
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and work collaboratively across teams
  • An interest in art, design and visual culture
